Middle Creek

Location
Middle Creek, VIC
Duration
3 Months
Project Type
Landslip Rehabilitation

MC Earthmoving was engaged as a subcontractor by Fulton Hogan to remediate a 45-metre-long, 5-metre-high landslip at Middle Creek for Latrobe City Council. With the creek directly below, safety was a top priority, involving the erection of fencing to prevent falls and using smaller, agile equipment capable of operating securely on solid foundations.

The project required tiered excavation to remove unstable material transported off-site and careful traffic management to navigate the single-lane roadway. Turnout locations, continuous radio communication, and pedestrian access measures ensured smooth operations without incidents, allowing residents to access their vehicle parked beyond the work zone.

The works included the installation of batter erosion protection, Terramesh units, and geogrids supplied by Geofabrics, along with the importation, compaction, and placement of fill material. A drainage filter was installed at the cut face of the slip in tandem with layer-by-layer construction, where each horizontal layer was completed before advancing to the next. The Terramesh units were woven together, and the rehabilitation process was capped with pavement reconstruction and the installation of a concrete-infused mat for toe drainage to minimise seepage into the slip zone.
